VFW to Host 64th Annual Memorial Day Service

Sonny Smyser, pastor of the Schuyler County Church of Faith in Lancaster, will be the featured speaker at the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post #4958 Veterans of Foreign Wars 64th Annual Memorial Day Services. The Memphis V.F.W. will host the special celebration beginning at 10:00 a.m. on the Scotland County Courthouse lawn on Monday, May 31st.

Post Commander Jamie Parker will welcome the guests prior to the traditional placing of the memorial wreath by Clark Mustoe and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Charles Harris.

Larry Smith of Downing Christian Church will offer the invocation prior to the performance of the “Star Spangled Banner” by the Scotland County R-I Band. The Schuyler County High School Band will perform “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” before the two groups will join forces to perform “America the Beautiful.” The Memphis Community Players graciously stepped aside to allow the collaboration of bands, but will be returning to the service in the future.

The Wallace W. Gillespie Post serves both Scotland and Schuyler counties.

First Judicial Circuit Judge Gary Dial will have the honor of introducing the featured speaker of the day.

Smyser, who calls Schuyler County home, is a name familiar to many area residents from his days as a race car driver. While he no longer regularly gets behind the wheel, he hasn’t totally retired from the sport, as he is a member of his son’s race team.

The Memorial Day Services will close with a rendition of “Sleep Soldier Boy” sang by Joshua and Jamie Parker with piano accompaniment provided by Connie Courtney. Larry Smith will offer the benediction and the VFW members will present a 21-gun salute while TAPS is played by Melinda Briggs, with Echo provided by Randon Kraus.
