FEMA Grant Funds New Air Packs for Gorin Firemen

A recent federal grant announcement has the Gorin Fire Department breathing a little easier, literally. On August 10th the volunteer fire protection service put eight new air packs into service during a special training session at the fire station.

The new self contained breathing apparatus were made possible by a federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The department received $82,840, with $34,000 earmarked for equipment and the remainder for protective equipment.

Fire Chief Mike Parrish indicated the grant funds helped purchase eight new ISI air packs along with a RIT rescue package that allows any of the air packs to be transformed into a dual oxygen source in an emergency situation that requires the extrication of a fellow fireman. The package also includes eight extra air bottles, which allows the department to double the amount of time that can be spent in a smoke-filled environment or other hazardous conditions.

The new systems will replace the departmentís existing extrication gear which has become outdated and will now be retired.

The grant funded the purchase of additional training resources for the department in addition to the new equipment.

A five percent local match was provided by the Gorin Fire Department to secure the grant, which was awarded March 12 this year.

So far in 2010, FEMA has awarded more than 5,100 AFG grants providing more than $500 million in aid to fire departments across the United States.
