Local Man Arrested for Trailer Theft in Kirksville
A Memphis man was arrested in Kirksville on Monday and is facing a Class C felony charge of stealing related to the alleged theft of a trailer in Adair County.
Russell B. Matthew, 27, of Memphis is being held in the Adair County Detention Center on $25,000 cash-only bond.
An investigation in August by the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department and Memphis Police Department determined that a trailer in Matthew’s possession was believed to be stolen.
The Kirksville Daily Express reported that a box trailer loaded with nearly $20,000 in heating/cooling equipment was reported stolen in Kirksville in May by Herb Haaf Heating and Cooling.
A box trailer matching the description was seized in Schuyler County on August 13th by Scotland County law enforcement officers following a local investigation into stolen scrap metal.
Scotland County Sheriff’s Deputy Bryan Whitney indicated the Play-mor box trailer had several unique characteristics, and identifiable marks that led them to believe it was the one stolen in Adair County, despite the fact that the vehicle identification numbers had been removed from the framework.
Matthew was taken into custody at the time by the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Department after allegedly assaulting a Scotland County Sheriff’s Deputy. Charges are pending in Schuyler County on those charges.
The evidence was seized and turned over to the Kirksville Police Department.
