Mayor Appoints New Prosecutor, City Attorney for Memphis

Memphis Mayor William Reckenberg made a pair of appointments on Thursday night to replace City Attorney David Peppard, who submitted his letter of resignation to the city council.

Reckenberg appointed April Wilson as the new city attorney and Kimberly Nicoli as the new city prosecuting attorney.

Peppard had handled both duties prior to submitting a letter of resignation last week.

At the Thursday Memphis City Council meeting, Reckenberg, presented the letter to the council as well as his recommendations for the appointments.

Wilson and Nicoli were both approved by a 4-0 vote of the council to take effect immediately.

The council also agreed to pursue a resolution that allows both attorneys to act in either capacity, in instances when a conflict of interest might disqualify one, or at times when one or the other is unavailable.

“Both these attorneys maintain private practices in addition to serving as counsel for the city,” Reckenberg stated. “Workloads vary and these folks can get very busy at times, so hopefully this setup will alleviate some of the log jams the city can run into as far as legal actions are concerned.”

The city does not pay a salary for either position. The city attorney and prosecuting attorney are paid via billable hours for services rendered.

Wilson was in attendance at the Thursday meeting and council members expressed a desire to move forward with legal action to determine ownership of the property on the south corner of the east side of the city square that collapsed last month.
