MPD Joins Area DWI Task Force

A federal effort to crack down on drivers under the influence has led several area law enforcement agencies to join forces.

Memphis Police Chief Bill Holland stated the MPD will be a member of an agreement along with the Scotland County Sheriff's Office, and the sheriff's departments in Clark and Knox counties, the Edina Police Department and Kahoka Police Department.

The group will perform DWI check points in the various jurisdictions, sharing manpower for the scheduled events in 2010.

By joining the task force, the MPD agrees to send available officers to work at the check points scheduled in any of the jurisdictions. Officers will receive overtime pay, that will be reimbursed to their respective departments through a federal grant.

The city council authorized the MPD's participation in the program.

City Attorney April Wilson noted the effort will not only benefit the communities where the checkpoints are held but will also allow the local officers to work with other law enforcement agencies to strengthen bonds and offer job experience.
