Fitness Center to Offer Health Programs to Kick Off New Year

It's that time of year again--Are you ready to kick your unhealthy habits and truly make a New Year's resolution you can accomplish? The Scotland County Community Fitness Center and the Scotland County Health Department are working together to offer a support group to help you stay on course. You may choose to "Walk Missouri" and/or a newly revamped "BLOG" at the Scotland County Community Fitness Center starting on Thursday, January 6, 2011.

The Scotland County Health Department, will again be offering the Walking Missouri program to the general public - free of charge. This eight week program is designed to track walking miles through the use of a pedometer on a weekly basis. Each Thursday walkers will report miles walked that week to a representative of the Health Department and be able to walk one mile free of charge (no membership required for this time period only) on the indoor track at the Fitness Center. At the end of the eight week program, those that have walked the entire distance to a determined point in Missouri will be entered into the drawing for a free 6 month individual membership to the Fitness Center.

As a result of the very successful program the last two years, the Scotland County Community Fitness Center, with the support of the Health Department will offer the chance to participate in the community's own "BLOG" (Biggest Loser's Own Gain).

This plan will be offered to the general public, but will have a $10 entry fee for the newly revamped 14 week program.

BLOG will be offered as a team concept. Participants may choose a group of three members or come individually and be assigned to a randomly selected group. Weekly weights will be recorded by a confidential weigh-in on each Thursday evening and the percentage of weight loss will be tracked, both individually and per team.

At the end of the initial 10 week period (March 17, 2011), the team with the biggest percentage of weight loss will receive half of the grand prize (to be determined based on entrants).

There will be no official recorded weigh-ins for the next four weeks. On April 21, the original participants will be requested to come back and record their final weight. At that time, the top three individual participants with the largest percentage of weight loss will split the remaining half of the prize money (equally three ways).

This new plan will reward the team participation and also those individuals that may lose some of their team members throughout the program, but continue to maintain their weight loss. It is also encouraging each participant to become accountable to themselves during the four week period before coming back for the final weigh in.

"Our goal is to offer a healthy, weight responsibility program through your choice of one or both of the above mentioned programs," said organizer Suzie Lister.

The key to a healthy lifestyle involves diet (food choice) and exercise. Past participants to both programs have found the group concept to be a huge support in their chosen program.

"We often find it difficult to stay the course when we are alone, however, with a supportive group, many things are possible," said Lister.

Come join the group on Thursday, January 6 at 5:15 p.m. at the Fitness Center Community Room and see how these programs can help make your New Year's resolution work for 2011.
