JOHN MERRITT FREDERICK

John Merritt Frederick, 84, died Tuesday evening, May 11, 2010 at his home in Bible Grove.

He was born the fifth child of Erastus Darwin (E.D.) and Elsie Jane (Smith) Frederick on March 27, 1926 in Bible Grove.

John attended school at Bible Grove. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II, earning an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He served as a first cook and was stationed in the Philippine Islands and on Hawaii.

Upon his return from the war, John married Genevia Marridee Spray on December 24, 1946. She preceded him in death on April 22, 2010.

John farmed, hayed, and raised cattle until his death. He enjoyed fishing, especially teaching his grandchildren how. John was an avid hunter and enjoyed family gatherings.

He was elected Associate Judge County Court, Eastern District of Scotland County for 16 years. John was a member of the Greensburg Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #414 and a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two children, Marilyn K. Childress in 1985 and Gary L. Frederick in 2008; three grandchildren in infancy; five brothers: Henry, Roscoe, Dean, Kent and Victor; three sisters: Betty Wright, Ruby Wright, and Sarah Jane Frederick.

He is survived by his children: Elsie and husband Albert Brassfield of Memphis, Rita and husband Fred West of Burlington, and John W. and wife Marie Frederick of Bible Grove; a son-in-law, Bruce and wife Jeannie Childress of Memphis; two sisters, Helen Dickerson and Hazel Unglesbee of Memphis; brother, George and wife Sharon Frederick of Downing; four sisters-in-law, Joan Frederick of Bible Grove, Louise Frederick of Memphis, Mona Frederick of Gorin, and Carla and husband Dave Pulliam of Kirksville; 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 15 at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Larry Smith, pastor of the Downing Christian Church officiating. An eulogy was given by Scott Brassfield. Les Richmond, Jim Dickerson, Clayton Miller, Josh McSparren, Scott Brassfield and Logan Brassfield served as pallbearers. Stanley Frederick, Larry Frederick, Richard Frederick, Ricky Frederick, David Frederick, Richard Lee Dickerson, Adam Frederick, Tom Barrickman, Ethan Wright and George Ingersoll served as honorary pallbearers. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial V.F.W. Post #4958 of Memphis. Burial was in the Bible Grove Christian Church Cemetery.

A Masonic service was conducted by the Greensburg Lodge #414 A.F. & A.M. Friday, May 14, at the Gerth Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Bible Grove Christian Church Cemetery or the Bible Grove Historical Preservation Society and can be left at or mailed to the Gerth Funeral Service, 115 S. Main St., Memphis, MO 63555.
