JAMES DORAN HERBERT

James Doran Herbert, 91 of Downing, Missouri passed away on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.

The son of Andrew and Mae (McVey) Herbert, Doran was born on May 26, 1919 in Bloomfield, Iowa. On November 10, 1939 in Memphis, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Bette Wheaton and to this union three children were born, Carolyn, James and Jerry.

Doran is survived by his wife, Bette Herbert of Downing, Missouri; 1 daughter, Carolyn Schmitter and husband, Curtis of Downing, Missouri; 1 son, James Herbert of Muscatine, Iowa; 8 grandchildren, Brenda Archibald and husband, Stephen of Sparks, Nevada, Bruce Schmitter and wife, Chris of Easton, Missouri, Shawn McKillip, Sherrie Metzger and husband, Rick, Liz Herbert and James Herbert all of Muscatine, Iowa, Lonnie Herbert of West Burlington, Iowa and Jamie Herbert and wife, Cheryl of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 15 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Bernadine Herbert of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Marilyn Wheaton of Lyons, Nebraska and Marie and Andrew Breuer of Fayetteville, Arkansas; a daughter-in-law, Linda Mitchell of West Burlington, Iowa; several nieces and nephews and other family members.

Doran was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Mae Herbert; a son, Jerry Herbert; a daughter-in -law, Cheryl Herbert and a granddaughter-in-law, Lori Schmitter; six sisters, Ola Padget, Dorothy Saner, Ival Saner, Lala Wheaton, Helen Rudd and Neoma Calhoun; four brothers, Lyle Herbert, Dean Herbert, Harold Herbert and one in infancy, Fletcher Herbert and several nieces and nephews.

Doran farmed and trucked in and around Bloomfield, Iowa for several years. In l965, he moved to New London, Iowa to work on building and trade construction and road construction as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local #537 and #234. In l982, Doran and Bette moved to Downing, Missouri.

In his younger years, Doran enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially with his grandson and son-in-law. He also enjoyed playing bingo at the Schuyler County Nutrition Site in Lancaster, Missouri twice a week with his friends. Doran enjoyed woodworking with all kinds of wood but his specialty was oak. He like to make quilt racks, T.V. tray tables and curio cabinets.

Doran was an active member of the Downing Christian Church in Downing, Missouri.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Downing Christian Church with Larry Smith, pastor of the Downing Christian Church officiating. Organist, Betty Anderson, provided music. Special musical selections were "In The Garden", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "I Won't Have To Cross Jordan Alone". Pallbearers were Bruce Schmitter, Spencer Schmitter, Lonnie Herbert, Jamie Herbert, Joshua Metzger and Jim Brewer.

Memorials have been established for the American Cancer Society or Inskeep Cemetery in Davis County, Iowa. Burial was in the Bloomfield IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield, Iowa.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster and Downing, Missouri.
