LaPlata Escapes Tigers Upset Bid Again With 4th Quarter Rally

For the second straight meeting, Scotland County had state-ranked LaPlata down heading into the fourth quarter only to see the Bulldogs come from behind to hand the Tigers another tournament loss.

After seeing LaPlata mount a furious fourth quarter rally in the championship game at the Novinger Tournament at the start of the season, SCR-I had a chance to atone for one that got away, meeting LaPlata in the semifinals of the North Shelby Tournament on Thursday.

SCR-I looked poised to do just that. The Tigers used some of LaPlataís own medicine against the Bulldogs. Scotland County knocked down seven three pointers in the contest to gain the advantage from long distance.

Kasey Dial connected twice from behind the arc in the first period but Scotland County still trailed 14-13 at the end of the first eight minutes of play.

Drew Miller and Dakota Wells hit three pointers and Kyle Shelley added four points in the paint as the Tigers pulled ahead 24-21 at the intermission.

The lead shrank to 38-37 heading into the final quarter when LaPlataís Birdie Buck once again took over the contest just like he had done in Novinger. The LaPlata guard knocked down a pair of three pointers and poured in 10 points in the final period as LaPlata rallied for the 57-52 victory.

Buck finished with 21 points and Taylor Wheeler had 22 points as the potent duo combined for all but 14 of their teamís points.

Scotland County had a more balanced scoring attack led by Dial with 16 points. Harely Stone added 11 points and Shelley finished with 10 points.
