Fast Start Not Enough For Lady Tigers to Outlast Eagles
Scotland County looked well on its way to avenging a pair of early season losses to Knox County and advancing to the championship of the North Shelby Tournament on Thursday night in Shelbina.
But a big first quarter lead quickly disappeared and the Eagles blew the game open late to cruise to a 51-31 win over the Lady Tigers dropping them into the third place contest.
SCR-I looked poised to play for the title after opening a 14-7 lead in the first eight minutes. Skyler Alderton knocked down a pair of three pointers and Jamie Shaw had a pair of field goals to help build the early lead.
But Knox County turned the tides in the second period, using a 17-2 run to lead 24-16 at the break. SCR-I went without a field goal over the eight minutes, getting its lone points on a pair of free throws by Aimee Dale.
The onslaught continued in the third quarter as Knox outscored SCR-I 16-7. Cali Holt had five points for SCR-I but it wasn’t enough to keep the lead from growing to 40-23.
The game turned into a free throw shooting exhibition, as Knox County attempted 16 shots from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter alone. For the game, the Eagles were 19 of 32 from the free throw line. SCR-I attempted just 11 free throws on the night and made only five.
SCR-I dropped to 8-5 on the year with the loss. Shaw had eight points to top the SCR-I scorebook. Holt finished with seven points and Alderton had six.
