LaPlata Leaves Lady Tigers Looking For More Offense After 39-36 Loss

Start with turnovers, toss in a helping of foul trouble and finish it off with a frigid shooting performance and you have a recipe for trouble. That was the dish LaPlata served up to the Lady Tigers in the third place game of the North Shelby Tournament on Saturday.

SCR-I opened an early 4-0 lead behind field goals by Anna Duley and Skyler Alderton. But the Lady Tigers were hampered by turnovers the final five minutes of the opening period, allowing LaPlata to hang around, down just 6-4.

Scotland County looked poised to blow the game open in the second period. Duley drilled a three pointer and Aimee Dale scored in the paint to push the lead to 11-6.

But the SCR-I shooting cooled off dramatically. Fortunately the Lady Tigers were very active on the glass. Offensive rebounds accounted for the next 10 points for SCR-I as Dale and Shaw each scored twice on put-backs and Kiley Frazier also converted a rebound for two points to help SCR-I remain on top 21-14.

LaPlata closed the first half on a 4-0 run to trim the deficit to 21-18. The Lady Bulldogs carried the momentum over into the third period, pulling ahead 22-21 before Courtney Jackson stopped the 7-0 run with a jumper from the wing. LaPlata took advantage of Scotland County foul trouble as Cali Holt was tagged with her fourth personal foul and Jamie Shaw her third, early in the third period, forcing both to the bench.

Ashley Tague pulled SCR-I within one with a pair of free throws that made the score 26-25 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

While the Lady Tigers defense kept them in the game, a frigid shooting night never allowed them to get over the top. SCR-I made just two of 15 shots from behind the arc on the night.

One of those makes was by Skyler Alderton, who gave SCR-I the lead back 34-33 with 2:48 left in the contest.

But SCR-I committed several costly turnovers down the stretch. LaPlata went back on top 37-34 before Shaw hit two key free throws to trim the advantage to one point with 1:20 left in the contest. SCR-I got the ball right back on a LaPlata turnover, but failed to take advantage of the opportunity, turning the ball back over to LaPlata. Still the Lady Bulldogs left the door open, missing four straight free throws in the final 60 seconds.

But SCR-I managed just a last-ditch three-point attempt after two costly turnovers allowed LaPlata to hold on for the 39-36 win.Shaw finished with 10 points to lead Scotland County, which fell to 8-6 on the year. Dale had six points and Alderton added five points.
