Lady Tigers Advance to District Semis With Win Over Marceline

A huge third quarter by Skyler Alderton and a dominating second half defensive performance insured that the Scotland County Lady Tigers’ 2009-10 basketball season would continue.

The #3 seeded SCR-I squad survived a tough first half to knock off #6 seed Marceline 49-27 on Monday night in the opening round of the Class 2 District 14 Tournament in Memphis.

SCR-I got off to a solid start as Jamie Shaw and Cali Holt each had a pair of field goals in the first period. Anna Duley’s three pointer put the Lady Tigers ahead 13-9 at the end of the first period.

But offense was hard to come by in the second quarter. Duley hit another three pointer, but the lone other field goal of the eight minute stretch came from Kiley Frazier, allowing Marceline to tie the game at 18-18 at the intermission.

That’s when Alderton caught fire. The junior guard canned three three pointers in the third period. The Lady Tigers turned up the intensity on the defensive end as well, not allowing Marceline a single field goal during the key stretch that saw a tie ballgame turn into a 30-20 advantage for SCR-I.

Scotland County punished Marceline in the paint in the fourth period. Forwards Ashley Tague, Aimee Dale and Jamie Shaw combined to score 14 points in the fourth period as the Lady Tigers finished the contest on a 19-7 run to blow the contest open.

Shaw finished with nine points to lead SCR-I, which improved to 15-9 on the year. Dale and Duley each had eight points in the win.

The Lady Tigers advance to the semifinals on Thursday night where they will play the winner of the Knox County North Shelby matchup. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. The other girls semifinal will feature top seeded Cairo versus #4 seed Milan at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The Wildcats beat Putnam County 60-46 to advance.

In the other opening night game, #4 seeded Marceline beat #5 seed Cairo in boys play 60-46 to earn the right to take on #1 seeded Putnam County at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.

The other boys semi-final will feature the winners of Tuesday night games between Knox County and North Shelby and Scotland County versus Milan. The two winners will play in the final Thursday night semi-final game set to tip off at 9:00 p.m.
