Scotland County Campus Bowl Season Closes With District Loss

The Scotland County R-I varsity campus bowl team concluded the 2009-2010 season at the district tournament hosted Saturday, April 17 by Putnam County schools in Unionville.

The Tigers concluded the opening round with wins over Putnam County and Schuyler County and an overtime loss to Knox County. That earned SCR-I the #2 seed in the final bracket, the evening single-elimination event.

But the host team Putnam County, the #3 seed in the finals, upset SCR-I 120-80 to end the Tigers season.

Scotland County concluded the 2009-2010 year with a 5-2 mark in the Tri-Rivers Conference. The Tigers bested Knox County 230-180 behind eight toss-up answers from Thomas Shannan.

SCR-I edged Schuyler County 130-100 with Brock Bondurant leading the team in scoring.

Brookfield fell to Scotland County 220-120 as Shannan, Bondurant and Brock Ebert combined to correctly answer 18 toss-up questions.

SCR-I beat Putnam County 190-160 behind six toss-up answers from Shannan and five from Bondurant.

The final league win came in a 170-120 decision over Milan featuring Shannan as the leading scorer.

The conference losses came at the hands of Clark County and North Shelby by identical margins of 190-130.

The SCR-I junior high campus bowl team went 4-3 in conference play.

The team defeated Knox County behind nine correct toss-up answers from Chris Smeltser.

Smeltser had a season-high 13 correct answers in a victory over Schuyler County.

Lee Tague, Morgan Carleton and Smeltser each answered five toss-up questions in a win over Putnam County.

Milan fell to SCR-I behind solid scoring performances by Emily Ebeling, Tague and Jennifer Miller.

Losses for the Tigers came at the hands of Brookfield, Clark County and North Shelby. Smeltser was the leading scorer in all three contests, with solid contributions from Tague and Sammi Tobler.

Collectively the teams competed in 10 tournaments during the 2009-2010 academic season. Four members of the SCR-I squads earned all tournament honors this year.

Thomas Shannan placed on the all-tourney team at the Scotland County Tri-Rivers Conference Tournament, the Kirksville Varsity Tournament and the All-District Tournament.

Tague was named to the junior varsity all-tournament team and the Scotland County Junior Varsity Fall Academic Challenge.

Smeltserís perfomances earned him all-tourney honors at the North Shelby and Schuyler County junior high events.

Shaina Shannan placed on the seventh grade all tournament team for her performance at the North Shelby Junior High Tournament.
