Local Student Artist Selected for Missouri Fine Arts Academy

At the Missouri Fine Arts Academy on the campus of Missouri State University, about 150 talented visual and performing artists from high schools across the state will be learning and growing this summer. Selection to the program is competitive. Tuition is based on a sliding scale according to financial need. The program receives additional financial support from Missouri public and private schools, the state legislature, and donations from alumni and other Academy advocates, as well as from various corporations, businesses, and organizations.

The Missouri Fine Arts Academy is conducted with the cooperation of the Missouri State Board of Education, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and Missouri State University. This summerís Academy is scheduled from June 6-June 26, 2010.

Among those selected to participate in 2010 Academy is Allen Bence from Scotland County High.

Students at the Academy participate in interdisciplinary coursework, where various aspects of the arts far explored, experienced, and integrated. A part of the curricular day is devoted to applied instruction in each studentís area of artistic expertise. This applied instruction, along with discipline-specific classes, makes up the afternoon schedules. Evenings are packed with cultural, educational, and social functions to broaden each studentís experiences as an artist, a learner, and a citizen.

Co-curricular events include art gallery visits; community service through the arts; hands-on arts workshops; attendance at a regional theatre production; faculty, student, and staff showcases and works in progress; social events; and a teacher appreciation day featuring a reception and performance for honored teachers.

All Missouri school districts and private schools may nominate students for the Missouri Fine Arts Academy. Nomination forms for the 2011 Academy will be posted on the Academy website, http://mfaa. misouristate.edu, and sent to school personnel next fall. Academy students are selected by a panel of artists and educators, who adjudicate studentsí written applications and portfolio or video submissions.

The Missouri Fine Arts Academy intends for young artists to use their Academy experiences to benefit their schools and communities. This intent is reflected in the 2010 Academy theme, ďMaking Connections,Ē which emphasizes artistsí responsibilities to use their gifts to make connections among people and artistic disciplines between process and product, and between art and the world.
