Early Home Run Pushes Putnam Past SCR-I 4-2

After going more than a week without playing a game thanks to rainouts, Scotland County was rudely welcomed back to the sport by conference rival Putnam County.

Marissa Shuey cracked a two run home run in the bottom of the first inning and that was all the scoring the Lady Midgets needed as they picked up a key Tri-Rivers Conference victory by a 4-2 margin on September 2nd in Unionville.

SCR-I stranded a pair of base runners in the top of the inning before Putnam County jumped out to the 3-0 lead. Katie Ryals led off with a double and scored on an RBI double by Samantha Shipley. Shuey, the Midgets clean-up hitter cleared the bases with her drive over the fence to put her team in control of the contest.

Shipley allowed just one base runner over the next three frames during which time her team extended the advantage to 4-0. Shipley doubled and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. She scored on an sacrifice fly by Shuey.

SCR-I finally got on the board in the fifth inning. Designated hitter Shaye Wright started the rally with a base hit. Kiley Frazier was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice by Megan Creek put two runners in scoring position. Elizabeth Duzan followed with an RBI single before Bethany Rader delivered a base hit to make the score 4-2.

The Lady Tigers left the bases loaded in the sixth inning, and could not push a run across in their final at bat, stranding Rader at third base.

The freshman took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs in seven innings of work. Putnam County had five hits and one walk while striking out three times.

Rader went 3-4 at the plate with an RBI. Duzan was 2-4 with an RBI. Wright and Hailey Dial recorded the other SCR-I hits.

Scotland County outhit the Lady Midgets 7-5 in the loss, which drops SCR-I to 5-4 on the season.
