Missouri Hay, Soybeans, Corn Production Decline In 2010

"A wet spring and above normal temperatures through the summer lead to lower yields than last year." said Gene Danekas, Director, Missouri Agricultural Statistics.

Missouri soybean production totaled 210 million bushels in 2010, down 9% from the 2009 crop. Farmers in Missouri harvested 5.07 million of the 5.15 million acres planted in the state, 4% below last year. Missouri yields averaged 41.5 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from last year.

Corn grain production in Missouri during 2010 totaled 369 million bushels, 17% below last year. Disappointing yields for the State averaged 123 bushels per acre, down 30 bushels from the 2009 yield. Corn for grain was produced from three million acres, while 60,000 acres were cut for silage, producing 900,000 tons. Acreage harvested for grain was 3% above last year while silage acreage was up 10,000 acres.

Missouri grain sorghum production totaled 2.57 million bushels, down 30% from 2009. This is the lowest production since 1955 when 2.51 million bushels were produced. Planted acreage, at a record low 40,000 acres, was down 10,000 acres from the previous record low in 2009.

Hay production in Missouri totaled 7.51 million tons, 7 percent below the 2009 production. Missouri hay yields averaged 1.96 tons per acre, compared with 2.07 a year earlier. Harvested area of all hay was 3.84 million acres, a decrease of 1 percent from 2009.

Nationwide, soybean production in 2010 totaled 3.33 billion bushels, down 1% from 2009. U.S. production is the second largest on record. The average yield per acre is estimated at 43.5 bushels, 0.5 bushel below last year's record high yield. Harvested area is up slightly from 2009 to a record high 76.6 million acres.

U. S. corn for grain production is estimated at 12.4 billion bushels, 5% below the record high production of 13.1 billion bushels set in 2009. U.S. grain yield for 2010 is estimated at 152.8 bushels per acre. This is 11.9 bushels below the record high yield of 164.7 bushels per acre set in 2009. Area harvested for grain is estimated at 81.4 million acres, up 2% from 2009.

U. S. sorghum grain production in 2010 is estimated at 345 million bushels, 10% below 2009. Planted area is estimated at 5.40 million acres, down 19% percent from last year.

U. S. production of dry hay for 2010 is estimated at 146 million tons, down 1% from the 2009 total. Area harvested is at 59.9 million acres, up slightly from last year. The average yield, at 2.43 tons per acre, is down 0.04 ton from the previous year.
