School Board Approves Public Hearing For Proposed Calendar

The Scotland County R-I Board of Education met in regular session on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. President Gary Miller called the meeting to order with six members present. Fred Clapp was absent.

Under old business, Superintendent Dave Shalley presented the board with the monthly financial update. He noted that total current revenues for Scotland County are $3,569,479 with total current expenses at $2,849,941, resulting in the district being $719,538 in the black for this fiscal year. Shalley pointed out that local tax revenue has put revenues ahead of expenses adding this will decrease each month with the majority of local revenue already being received.

Board Workshop

The board workshop has been re-scheduled for February 21st at 6:30 p.m. This will be the district's third attempt to meet. The previously scheduled meetings were canceled, due to inclement weather.

NEMO Net Calendar

This item was tabled until next month. Each year the NEMO Net schools adopt a similar calendar. This year, the NEMO Net meeting was postponed due to weather; causing the calendars to arrive late. According to State law, the district must give notice of a public hearing to discuss the school calendar, if it calls for a start date more than ten calendar days prior to the first Monday in September. (Mo. Chapter 171, Section 171.031)

Therefore, a public hearing will be held March 10th at 6:15 p.m. to hear any comments on the proposed calendar.

Overnight Requests

The board voted 6-0 to approve two overnight requests from the Pom squad and one from the high school band. The Poms will be competing February 12th in Dunlap, Illinois, and February 26th in O'Fallon. The band has been accepted to compete May 13 and 14 in the Music in the Parks Festival at Six Flags in St. Louis.

Retirement

The board voted 6-0 to accept, with regret, the resignation of Lori Fulk.

"Mrs. Fulk has been with the district for all 31 years of her career," Shalley stated. "During this time, she has developed an outstanding elementary music program, which is highlighted each year by the elementary Christmas concert. We wish her the best."

Executive Session

The board entered into executive session at 8:34 p.m. and approved the following:

Minutes from the January 12th board meeting (6-0)

Coaching assignment as follows:

Assistant Golf - Coach Mark Drummond (6-0)

Nomination of Sabe Sears for the JACK Holly M.U.S.I.C. Scholarship (6-0).

Accept the evaluation of Elementary School Principal Rhonda McBee (6-0)

Accept the evaluation of the superintendent (6-0)

The board voted 6-0 to go into open session for the purpose of adjournment at 10:17 p.m.
