Snow Days Mean Changes for SCR-I Calendar, Graduation

The one built-in make-up day in the Scotland County R-I School calendar is long gone and the SCR-I administration is now faced with penciling in six others courtesy of the latest round of winter storms.

"Due to the recent blizzard, we have made some changes in our calendar," said Superintendent Dave Shalley at the February meeting of the Scotland County R-I Board of Education.

Shalley noted that back in the 2009-2010 school year the district could be exempt from the requirement to make up days of school lost or canceled due to inclement weather, when the school district has made up the 6 days required under subsection 2 of this section and half of the number of additional lost or canceled days up to 8 days, resulting in no more than 10 total make-up days required by this section.

Under this inclement weather statute, a district/charter school would be required to make up the first 6 days of school missed due to inclement weather. Additionally, there would be a requirement to make up the 7th day missed with the 8th day being forgiven; the 9th day would need to be made up with the 10th being forgiven; the 11th day would need to be made up with the 12th being forgiven and the 13th day would need to be made up with the 14th being forgiven.

After the district has made up 10 days, there would be no requirement to make up any additional days.

With the current law in place, all schools must attend 174 days and at least 1044 hours.

"Our calendar has 175 days, so we have one make-up day built in," Shalley stated. "We have currently missed seven days."

The Scotland County R-I make-up days will be as follows: March 11, with a 1:05 dismissal, May, 19, 20, 23, 24 and 25. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held March 16th and a professional development day will be held March 11th (both 1:05 dismissals) and the end of the 3rd quarter will be March 11th.

Due to the addition of days at the end of the year, the board voted 5-1 to move graduation ceremonies back one week, from May 15 to May 22, with a 3:00 p.m., start time. Mrs. Davis, Mr. Campbell, Mr. Koontz, Mr. Miller and Dr. Tobler voted yes, Mr. McKee voted no.
