Fire Destroys Garage at Arbela Residence

A passing motorist noticed flames coming from a garage at a residence at the intersection of Route A and Highway 136 near Arbela on Monday afternoon and notified emergency responders helping divert disaster.

The Scotland County Fire Department and the Gorin Fire Department were dispatched to the Eugene Piper residence located on the south side of Highway 136 at the "Arbela 4 Corners".

Upon arrival, emergency responders found the south end of the attached garage engulfed in flames. Hose teams from both departments entered the building and quickly doused the blaze.

Fire damage was limited to the southern and western walls of the garage area including items that were stored in the rafters of the garage. Two vehicles parked in the building were also damaged. The residence sustained minor smoke damage but the fire was stopped before it reached the home.

The fire apparently was caused by burning debris adjacent to the garage.
