Fundraising Efforts Generate $5,000 For New School Playground

Fundraising efforts are well underway for a proposed playground expansion at the Scotland County R-I Elementary School. Visitors at the school's Family Fun Night earlier this month learned that more than $5,000 has been raised in just over six months.

Elementary School Principal Rhonda McBee explained that the project is targeting the creation of a new playground, primarily for students in preschool through second grade. Preliminary design calls for the new playground to be constructed on the west end of the school to allow easy access from the building and to the restrooms in the west end.

"We began the playground fundraiser during the fall of 2010," McBee said. "After adding recess for the fifth and sixth grades to our schedule in 2008, it became apparent that one playground would not support 300 students and our school's schedule."

The project's first contribution, was $967 raised by the teachers who paid $1 weekly to wear casual clothes/jeans on Fridays during the 2009-2010 school year.

"Our elementary staff put together a cookbook with the help of many parents and at this time we have earned $1,401 for the project through those sales, McBee said. She added that there are still copies of the book available for $12.

Christine Schroeder aided the fundraising efforts with a Pampered Chef program around Christmas which netted $230.

Elementary School counselor Dani Fromm worked with Wal-Mart and received a $1,000 grant for the project.

Most recently, PTO pledged $1,010 from the proceeds of the group's 4th grade basketball tourney held at the school as well as the group's Valentine Day fundraiser.

The school's goal is to raise $20,000 for the project. The teachers group has already pledged to donate the proceeds from its casual Friday's program again this year. The district is actively seeking other community group's support of the project. For more information or to make a donation contact Dani Fromm or Rhonda McBee at the SCR-I Elementary School, 660-465-8532.
