Apparent Triple Murder, Suicide Discovered in Mercer County

An apparent marital dispute ended tragically for a former Memphis man when the Mercer County Sheriff's Department discovered the gruesome results at a rural home near the small town of Modena, near the Iowa state line.

Mercer County Sheriff Steven Stockman discovered what is being labeled an apparent triple murder and suicide when he responded to a report of a shooting at the residence at 4:02 p.m. on Saturday, April 9th.

Stockman discovered four deceased shooting victims at the scene. The victims have been identified as 33 year old, Waylon Wages; 41 year old Lisa Tunnell; 37 year old Misty Hufford and the shooter 50 year old John Hufford; all of the Princeton area.

Hufford was a 1979 graduate of Scotland County R-I High School in Memphis.

According to court records, John Hufford had been served with divorce papers by Misty Hufford at the end of March.

Stockman indicated in published reports that he believed the incident was related to the divorce.

The Mercer County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Grundy County Sheriff's Office, Harrison County Sheriff's Office, Harrison County-Missouri Conservation Agent, Mercer County Ambulance District, and Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The investigation continues, however the sheriff's office indicated no arrests are expected in connection with this incident.
