MoDOT Sells Two Local Roadside Parks

HANNIBAL - MoDOT has sold the Meyers-Dowdall Roadside Park off of Route 15 just south of Memphis and the Coon Creek Roadside Park on Route 15 south of Edina to abutting property owners. "For the last few years, we have been trying to reduce any excess land we own to help us reduce maintenance costs, so this conveyance made sense," explained MoDOT Right of Way Manager Nathan Briggs.

After receiving requests from abutting property owners of the two parks to purchase the land, MoDOT performed traffic counts on these parks. The results of these studies indicated there was more activity overnight, and the activity was not for what the roadside parks were designated. "The maintenance costs associated with upkeep outweigh the benefits of park utilization," Briggs added.

The maintenance costs involved mowing and trash pickup There were several people who were using these parks as dumping areas.

"We found large trash items as well as bagged trash from home use," he added.

MoDOT has sold or closed several roadside parks throughout the state in an effort to reduce its maintenance costs.
