Stolen Vehicle Recovered in Oklahoma

A Memphis man awoke to find he wasn't the victim of an April Fool's joke, but actually had been the victim of a crime on the evening of March 31st. Now the joke is on a Queen City man, who is in custody in Oklahoma, awaiting extradition back to Missouri to face charges of vehicle theft.

Richard Squires, 38, of Queen City, is being held in Oklahoma following his arrest by the Roff Police Department. Squires was involved in a brief vehicle pursuit with Oklahoma law enforcement officers last week, before ultimately being apprehended by the Roff PD on July 6th.

Squires was driving a 2000 Pontiac that he allegedly stole from Memphis on March 31, 2011. The vehicle was the property of Michael Slaughter of Memphis.

"Unfortunately due to the age and mileage of the vehicle combined with the method it has been maintained in over the past three months, the vehicle is being classified a total loss," said Memphis Police Chief Bill Holland.

Holland indicated that Squires likely will be picked up in Oklahoma by the Scotland County Sheriff's Department, sometime next week while officers also will be transporting a suspect back to Memphis from Texas.

Squires has been charged with the Class C felony of stealing a motor vehicle. He is being held on a $50,000 cash only bond.

He also had a warrant for his arrest issued in April for failure to obey judges orders stemming from a June 2010 arrest for driving a motor vehicle while his license was revoked.
