Santa's Helpers Making Plans for 2011 Christmas Season

The Scotland County Adopt-A-Child Program is gearing up for the 2011 season. November 1st - 17th will be the sign up time, for parents to register their children for the program.

Santa's Helpers was established to help parents during a tough time, and in hopes to have a gift or two under the tree, come Christmas morning for those children living in Scotland County.

"There are similar programs to Santa's Helpers, such as Toys for Tots, etc.," said organizer Michele Drummond. "Unfortunately over the years some groups have found families utilizing more than one program and using the program year after year. The heart of these programs, including Santa's Helpers, is to help families in a time of need, so they can get back on their feet."

Please remember, this program is not to replace what a family can do, it is to help with what they can't do. It's not something to take advantage of, because there are families that truly need the help.

Adopt-A-Child Sign-up

Santa's Helpers is available to children ages newborn to 17 years of age and must live in Scotland County. Special circumstances will be considered for those over 17 years old. Please contact Michele prior to signing up children over 17yrs. old by calling 660-216-6226 and leave your name, number and a brief message.

Again, parents can sign their children up for the "Adopt a Child" program between Tuesday, November 1st and Thursday, November 17th, 2011. Signup sheets are located at Memphis City Hall, Pamida in Memphis and the Scotland County Sheriff's office.

Signup sheets must contain the parents name(s) and MUST have a good working phone number, before the child will be set up in the system.

Again this year, parents will be responsible for picking the gifts up on Monday, December 12th from 5-7pm, at the Memphis Fire Station.

If the parent (the one listed on the signup sheet) is unable to pick up the gifts, they can have another individual pick up the gifts. But, the parent must be the one to notify Michele prior to December 12th, as to who is picking up the gifts, or they will not be released.

Wish Lists

The "wish lists" will be placed on the "Adopt a Child" tree at Pamida in Memphis. Individuals can take one or more "wish lists" and purchase items on those list.

Once a wish list is chosen by a patron, they are asked to fill out the bottom portion of the card completely and place it in the container located under the tree. The rest of the card needs to be attached to the purchase. Gifts can be returned to Pamida in Memphis or dropped off during business hours at City Hall. GIFTS ARE NOT TO BE WRAPPED and they must be returned no later than Tuesday, December 6th.

Monetary Donations

The program doesn't want to take a chance that a family needs to add their child(ren) at the last minute because of a family emergency or that there are names left on the tree. Santa's Helpers is here to lend a helping hand with the public's help and support and does not want any child to go without; therefore, monetary donations can be left at Bank of Kirksville in Memphis and it will be deposited directly into the Santa's Helpers account.

The "Adopt a Child" volunteers will finish any last minute shopping that is needed in the last few days prior to the parent's pick up night. The shopping is only made possible with the continued support of people like you. Rather you select "wish lists" from the tree or give a monetary donation your generosity is greatly appreciated.

"We thank everyone for their past support and hope we can continue to count on you again this year," said Drummond. "Santa's Helpers would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."

For more information contact Drummond at 660-216-6226 and leave a message.
