Chamber to Kickoff Christmas Season on November 19th

Area residents set their clocks back an hour over the weekend as Daylight Savings Time officially ended. The Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce is asking you now to move your calendar a week forward.

Actually there is no time travel required, just an adjustment to the planning schedule as the chamber recently unveiled a new plan for the traditional Christmas opening ceremonies.

The MACC announced the Lighting of the Square ceremonies, will be held on Saturday, November 19th. This is a departure from the normal routine, as for years the event was held on the Friday following Thanksgiving.

"The Chamber is hoping the schedule change will allow more people to attend the festivities," said MACC president Jeanne Snodgrass. "A lot of people are traveling during the holiday weekend."

Memphis Mayor William Reckenberg will throw the switch on the chamber's Christmas lights at dusk, signifying the start of the holiday season.

The chamber will be offering numerous giveaways throughout the afternoon for patrons present for the event. Free train rides with Santa will be offered to children beginning around 3:30 p.m. Many businesses will be hosting weekend open houses on Saturday and Sunday, kicking off special extended hours through Thanksgiving weekend and beyond up until Christmas.

Entertainment will be provided by members of the Scotland County R-I band as well as other community musicians.
