Area CVMA Chapter Plays Santa Claus for Local Veterans

Veterans helping veterans - That is the motto of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, whose local branch recently did just that, providing a special Christmas for several veterans who are residents at the Scotland County Care Center.

Members of the Missouri Chapter 4-7 of the CVMA visited the facility in Memphis on Sunday, December 18th bearing gifts.

Eight residents with past military service received gift bags from chapter members, who spent the afternoon with their fellow veterans swapping stories and spreading holiday cheer.

The event was one of many spread across northeast Missouri from Memphis to Brookfield, with the bikers bearing Christmas packages for veteran residents.

"This is our second year offering this service and it has already grown immensely," said member Chuck Reedy, an Arbela resident. After traveling to Scotland County for nearly two decades to hunt, Reedy moved to Arbela from the Chicago area last June after his retirement.

Chuck and his wife Nadine solicited donations from Scotland County businesses to help support the local effort. "We cannot say enough about the support of the community," Chuck said. "The people we visited with were extremely generous and very supportive of the effort."

It was support like that received in Memphis that has allowed the group to expand the Christmas gifts project to serve more than 80 area nursing home residents in just its second year, more than doubling in size from its starting point in 2010.

The CVMA consists of veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces who ride motorcycles as a hobby. With chapters in nearly all 50 states, the group's mission is to support and defend those who have defended our country and our freedoms, focusing on helping veteran care facilities provide a warm meal, clothing, shelter, and guidance, or simply to say "Thank You." and "Welcome Home."
