Principal Rhonda McBee Announces Retirement Plans at December School Board Meeting

As the 2011-2012 school year approached the halfway point, the district learned last week that it will be searching for a new principal for the following school year.

Elementary School principal Rhonda McBee announced her plans to retire at the conclusion of the current school year.

The SCR-I Board of Education voted 7-0 to accept, with regret, McBee's resignation. Mrs. McBee will be completing her 32nd year in education, all of which are with Scotland County R-I.

The announcement was made during the SCR-I board meeting on December 12th.

In other business, the board received the annual audit of the district. The audit was conducted by Wade Stables, PC. The audit found no significant deficiencies and Scotland County complied in all material respects on each of its federal programs. The results of the audit can be found on Page 11 of this week's newspaper.

The board voted 7-0 to approve this audit.

Financial Update

The board reviewed the current financial status of the district.

"At this time, we have received 44% of the budgeted revenues and have used 33% of the budgeted expenses," said Superintendent Dave Shalley.

Shalley indicated the normal rate after five months is 41%.

"Year to date, our expenses are $1,955,388.84 and revenues are $1,433,489.58, resulting in a deficit of $521,899.26," he said. "This is in the normal range for this time of year."

Overnight Trips

The board voted 7-0 to allow two overnight trips for the pom squad. The poms will be performing January 28th in St. Charles and February 25th in the Missouri State Pom Competition in Lee's Summit.

Review APR

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released each district's APR for the 10-11 school year. The APR is a measure of how schools perform based on 14 criteria.

These criteria include test scores in the following areas: grade 3-5 math and communication arts, grades 6-8 math and communication arts, and end-of-course exams in Algebra I and English II. The other indicators are ACT scores, advanced courses taken by students, career education courses, college placement, career education placement, graduation rate, attendance rate and sub group achievement.

Each area is considered Met or Not Met. Schools that receive Met in 14 areas receive the Accredited with Distinction label. Schools may replace a Not Met if they qualify for the bonus, which is improvement in five of six areas.

Scotland County will be Accredited with Distinction using the bonus to replace a Not Met in the algebra I end-of-course exam. This is the seventh consecutive year for Scotland County to receive this award.

School Report Card

The School Report Card is available for review on the DESE website at www.dese.mo.gov. The report card reviews areas of student performance, attendance and characteristics of staff and student body, as compared to the state average.
