FREDA LAY COOK
(6/14/1915 - 5/9/2011)



Freda Lay Cook, 95, of Memphis, Mo, formerly of Downing, MO passed away Monday, morning, May 9, 2011, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO.

The daughter of George Eylor and Lillie Estella "Harbison" Snodgrass, she was born June 14, 1915 in Schuyler County, MO near Downing. She grew up on a farm there and went to school at Middle Fabius.

On November 25, 1937 she married Everett Furn Lay and to this union two sons were born, Samuel George and Richard Vern Lay. She moved to a farm near Memphis until Richard passed away at the age of nine. The family then moved to Hollywood, CA, where she was employed in a toy factory. They moved back to Memphis six months later. In July 1966 Furn passed away and she went back to work seeking employment at Clyde Evans Restaurant, for fourteen years before retiring at the Scotland County Hospital in housekeeping. Freda then married Wallace Cook of Downing, MO on June 18, 1985. He preceded her in death in March of 2007.

Freda loved to sew, make quilts, do embroidery, read the Bible and work in her garden. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church in Memphis.

Her other interests included collections of cactus and Iris's, owls, bells and blown glass. When she was first married to Wallace she thoroughly enjoyed going to flea markets and garage sales.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, one son, Richard Vern Lay in July of 1951, two brothers, Alpha Edward Snodgrass- infant, and Victor Snodgrass, one sister Elma Smith Sweeney, one sister-in-law, Cecil Snodgrass and three brother-in-laws, Glen Martin, Althel Smith and Don Duley.

Survivors include, one son, Samuel Lay and his wife Colene of Monticello, MO, two grandsons Gregory Lay of Hannibal, MO and Randall Lay and his wife Andrea of Palmyra, MO, three great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Adam and Ashley Lay, two sisters, Lena Martin and Nellie Duley, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Scotland County Care Center and can be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison St., Memphis, MO 63555.

Funeral services were held at the Payne Funeral Chapel on Thursday, May 12, 2011. Officiating the service was Rev. Leon Buford. Interment followed in the Memphis Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Adam, Randall and Greg Lay, Phil Duley, Terry Simerl and Max Snodgrass.

Musicians were Rick and Ruth Addison.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis.
