OPAL ELIZABETH ANDERSON
(5/25/1919 - 7/17/2011)



Opal Elizabeth Anderson, 92 of Memphis, Missouri formerly of Downing, Missouri passed away at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, Missouri Sunday, July 17, 2011.

The daughter of William Wilbur and Bertha Elizabeth (Snowbarger) Schmitter, she was born on May 25, 1919 in Queen City, Missouri. On December 22, 1938, she was united in marriage to Alva Paul (Salty) Anderson and to this union 6 children were born, Rebecca Joan, Maxine, Tommy Lee, Carl Dean, Jay Dee and Cindy Lou.

Opal is survived by her children, Rebecca Joan Havens and husband, Fred of Downing, Missouri, Maxine Ruth and husband, I. G. of Downing, Missouri, Tommy Lee Anderson and wife, Carolyn of Downing, Missouri and Carl Dean Anderson and wife, Annette of Downing, Missouri; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Thelma Anderson of Kirksville, Missouri; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Opal is preceded in death by her parents; her husband on April 8, 1995; a daughter, Cindy Lou Anderson in 1958; one son, Jay Dee Anderson in 1968; two grandsons, Eugene Garrett and William Samuel Jackson; one brother and sister-in-law, Samuel and Emma Schmitter and one sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Omar Seamster.

Opal and Salty owned and operated Anderson's Antiques in Downing, Missouri for a number of years as long as their health permitted.

Opal was a member of the Downing Christian Church where she faithfully attended and was also a member of their CWA. Years earlier, she was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church Ladies Aide. Opal was also a vibrant Red Hatter as she thoroughly enjoyed attending these meetings with her Red Hat Sisters! She received first place at the Golden Oldies Statewide Nursing Home Competition in Hannibal, Missouri. During Downing Appreciation Days, she was a queen contestant and had been honored as Grand Marshall during the parade.

She was a caring wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by many.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Downing Christian Church with Larry Smith, pastor of the Downing Christian Church officiating. Music was provided by Betty Anderson, organist and Bill Shewmaker soloist. Special selections were "In The Garden" and "Amazing Grace". Pallbearers were Alan Garrett, Bobby Garrett, Billy Anderson, Steve Anderson, Robert Anderson and Danny Reese.

Memorials have been established for the Downing Christian Church. Burial will be held in the Downing Cemetery in Downing, Missouri. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster and Downing, Missouri.
