BARBARA JEAN HOWARD
(2/20/1931 - 10/12/2011)



Barbara Jean Howard, 80, of Memphis, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis.

She was born February 20, 1931, at Enterprise, Kansas to Frank Eldon and Myrtle Alderton Scott.

Barbara attended Gorin Elementary and High School, Gorin, Missouri and was a 1949 graduate of Wyaconda C-I High School in Wyaconda, Missouri.

Barbara married Alvin Howard, June 25, 1950, in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at Gorin, Missouri and to this union two sons were born. They began their married life on the farm which had been family owned for many years. They acquired their first aircraft in 1956 and began their flying instructions. She and her husband both earned their private pilot's license in 1957 and Barbara was the first female student of Glen Wiley, C.F.I., to obtain such a license. They joined the International Flying Farmers-Missouri, Chapter, Missouri Pilots Association. Barbara was a charter member of the Ozark Chapter 99's.

She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Gorin, Missouri and P.E.O., Chapter C of Memphis, Missouri, having served as past treasurer as well as having been very active in many community, school, church and civic affairs, including the Scotland County Genealogical Society, Memphis Red Hats Society, the Jauflione Chapter NSDAR and the Scotland County Historical Society where she had been serving as chairman of the Memphis Depot, a part of the Downing House Complex.

She is survived by her husband, Alvin R. Howard, of Memphis, Missouri; two sons: Brian Scott Howard and his wife, Rachel, of Columbia, Missouri; Neil Blake Howard of Memphis, Missouri; nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Dorothy Evelyn Hannum, a brother in infancy and a brother-in-law, Dr. Jack Hannum.

Visitation was open at the Memphis Funeral Home on Friday, October 14, 2011 with the family present to receive friends and relatives from 6 until 8 P.M. A P.E.O. service was held at 5:45 P.M.

Funeral services were held at the funeral home on Saturday, October 15, with Pastor Mark Drummond, Reverend Jim Campbell, Reverend Ernest Deatrick and Gilvie Franke officiating. Music will be provided by Lori and Joe Fulk, soloists and Connie Courtney, accompanist.

Burial followed in Union Cemetery. Casket bearers were Duane Arnold, Tom Deberry, Mark Glasscock, Jimmy Scott, Phillip Scott and Paul Tague. Honorary bearers will be Jeff Alderton, Jim Alderton, Terry Fincher, Jeff Hannum, Allan Hulet, Mike Hulet and Robert Parrish. To honor Barbara's memory, memorials may be made to the Gorin Pleasant Grove Baptist Church or the Memphis Depot Restoration and may be left at or mailed to Memphis Funeral Home, 378 South Market Street, Memphis, Missouri 63555.
