Novinger Stops SCR-I Streak at 12 Straight With 11-7 Defeat

All good things come to an end, and that was the case for a 12-game winning streak for the Scotland County baseball team. Playing their fourth game in four nights, SCR-I closed out the regular season with an 11-7 loss to Novinger in Memphis on May 12th.

After hosting a conference double header Monday night and then traveling to Edina to close out the TRC season on Wednesday, SCR-I headed into Thursday's non-conference tilt a bit out of gas.

Harley Stone took the mound for the Tigers, but pitched just two innings before being pulled by Coach TJ Duncan in preparation for the start of the district tournament on Saturday.

Novinger got to the junior hurler for a single run in the top of the first before tacking on two more runs in the second inning.

SCR-I tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Drew Miller doubled and scored on a double by Brock Bondurant.

Already trailing 3-1, the wheels came off in the top of the third for SCR-I. A pair of errors opened the door for Novinger to bat around in the inning and score seven unearned runs off reliever Cordie Kigar.

Trailing 10-1, SCR-I battled back to cut the deficit to 10-7.

Sabe Sears started the bottom of the third with a base hit. Miller and Bondurant followed with singles. Sears scored on a double play but that was the lone run in the frame.

The Tigers plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of three consecutive Novinger errors. Sabe Sears opened the rally with a base hit. He scored when Andrew Mathes reached on an error. Rod Sears delivered a clutch two-out single to plate two more runs to make the score 10-5.

SCR-I added two more unearned runs in the sixth inning. Mathes and Kigar drove in the runs with base hits.

Novinger added a run in the top of the 7th and SCR-I ran out of time in the 11-7 loss.

Stone allowed three runs in two innings to take the loss. He gave up four hits and walked three while striking out four.

Kigar allowed seven runs, only one earned, in five innings of work. The sophomore allowed eight hits and three walks while striking out 10.

Miller was 2-4 at the plate with three runs scored. Bondurant went 2-4 with 2 RBI and Sabe Sears went 2-5 with two runs scored.

The loss gave SCR-I a 12-3 mark to close out the regular season.
