Tigers Qualify For State Track Meet in Five Events

The Scotland County track team cleared the final hurdle in the race to the state championships this weekend in Jefferson City. SCR-I had five top four finishes at the Class 2 Sectional 2 track meet Saturday in Centralia.

The Tigers qualified to compete in five events at the grand finale to be held May 20-21 at Dwight T Reed. Stadium on the campus of Lincoln University.

Sabe Sears will compete in three events at state. The senior cleared 6' 2" to take second place in the high jump. Austin Francis of Salisbury was tops in the event, clearing 6' 5".

Sabe earned second place in the triple jump with a distance of 40' 8.25". Andrew Baum of Brookfield was first with a distance of 41' 9.5".

He closed out the huge day with a second place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. The Tigers' squad of Sabe Sears, Rod Sears, Zach Miller and Lucas Howard crossed the finish line in 3:36.32 behind only Fatima's team.

Howard also advanced to state in the 300 meter hurdles where the freshman took home third place in a time of 43.39 seconds. Fatima's Kyle Tellman won the race in 42.24 seconds followed by Bryan Lechner of South Callaway.

Rod Sears returns to the state championships in the 800-meter run. The senior finished fourth at sectionals in a time of 2:05.79. Nick Zink of Iberia won the race followed by Josh Hughart of South Shelby and Eric Boeckmann of Fatima.

Rod failed to qualify for state in the 400 meter run, where he finished seventh in a time of 53.73 seconds.

Miller finished seventh at sectionals in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.94 and was also seventh in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.84 seconds.
