Sears Cousins Take Podium at State Track Championships

A pair of Scotland County athletes took the podium at the Missouri Class 2 state track meet in Jefferson City on Saturday to receive medals for their performances. Rodney Sears earned third place in the 800-meter run while cousin Sabe Sears brought home a pair of medals, finishing second in the triple jump and eighth in the high jump.

Those three top finishes were good enough to gain Scotland County a 14th place finish with a team score of 15 points.

Sabe Sears earned eight points with a second place showing in the triple jump. The senior made the distance of 42' 10". Kris Kuoappamaki of Marionville won the event with a triple jump mark of 43' 9.5". Romello McCoy of Malden was third (42' 6.5") followed by Nick Coulter of Maplewood-Richmond Heights (MRH) (42' 5.25"), Jordan Britton of Hollister (42' 3"), Tyler Coonis of Fair Grove (42' 0.5"), Robert Baldwin of Pierce City (41' 11.25") and Andrew Baum of Brookfield (41' 9.75").

Sabe also picked up one point with an eighth place finish in the high jump. He cleared 6'.

Derek Turner of Pierce City made 6' 5" to win first place. Austin Francis of Salisbury was second at 6' 3" Alexander Everhart of Crest Ridge was third followed by Dominic Davis of Plattsburg and Dalton Freeze of Stockton who all went out at 6'2". Chris Eichholz of Fatima made 6'1" to earn sixth place followed by Sumner Foster of Charleston in seventh.

After winning his heat race, Rod Sears shaved more than a second off his time but still had to settle for third place in the 800-meter run finals. The senior finished in 2:01.07 to earn six points for the team. Sears won the section 1 qualifier in a time of 2:02.87.

Austin Holmsley of Principia crossed the finish line first in a time of 1:58.22. Austin Hardy of Mark Twain was second in 1:58.47. Rod was the lone non-Austin in the top four, as Ash Grove's Austin Slagle was fourth.

Rounding out the eight medalists were Brian Burnett of Cole Camp, Donovan Stout of Gallatin, Caleb Hoover of College Heights and Ross Furbush of Principia.

Scotland County finished in 10th place in the 4 x 400 meter relay in a time of 3:33.82. The team from MRH was tops in a time of 3:24.74 followed by Principia, Trenton and Liberty. Strafford was fifth with Fatima in sixth and Pierce City and LaFayette County earning the final two spots on the podium.

The Tigers team consisted of Rod and Sabe Sears, Zach Miller and Lucas Howard.

Howard finished 14th in the 300-meter hurdles state championship. The freshman crossed the finish line in 43.64 seconds. Dylan Barnum of Strafford was tops in a time of 39.30 followed by Jordan Akers of Lawson and Nick Coulter of MRH.

Maplewood-Richmond Heights won the team title with 104 total points. Principia was second with 50 points. Strafford took third place with 41 points while College Heights and Scott City tied for fourth with 37 points.
