Tigers' Conference Football Title Hopes Take Big Hit in Loss to Milan

Coming off a promising victory over Putnam County to open the conference schedule it will be back to the drawing board for Scotland County following a disappointing showing in Milan on Friday night where SCR-I was shutout by the Wildcats 54-0.

A penalty on the opening drive forced Scotland County to go three and out on offense and punt to Milan.

The Tigers defense held, but let a scoring opportunity slip through its fingers, literally. Harley Stone sacked quarterback Jordan Eddy and forced a fumble. The loose ball bounced away from a pair of Tigers who attempted to scoop up the fumble and take it in for a touchdown. Milan ultimately recovered and punted the ball away.

After another penalty-aided three and out on offense by the Tigers, Milan was able to convert on a third and long situation as Eddy connected with Marcus Shipley, who made a leaping catch to move the chains. That set up a 21-yard TD run by Brad Hisel as time expired in the first period. Raul Palacios made the point after attempt to put Milan on top 7-0.

Palacios kickoff pinned SCR-I near its own end zone to start the next possession. Will McRobert gave his team some breathing room when he broke a 26-yard run. The Tigers used a fake punt play near midfield to move the chains again as Harley Stone eluded the Milan defenders on his way to a 21-yard gain. But SCR-I's drive came to an end with a fumble.

Milan marched the ball down the field before Mason Thompson capped off the drive with a seven-yard TD run with 5:55 left in the first half. Palacios PAT kick made it 14-0.

Penalties again backed the Tigers up on their next possession. The Wildcats forced their second turnover of the first half, picking off a pass and returning it into scoring position.

Cooper Bankus punched the ball in from one-yard out with 2:10 left in the first half. Palacios drilled the PAT kick to make the lead 21-0.

A good kick return by Laden Holt had the Tigers near midfield with a scoring opportunity to close out the half. But the Tigers went three and out and left enough time on the clock for Milan to mount one final drive of the first half. Aaron Richardson scored on a 29-yard TD run with 45 seconds left on the clock. The PAT made it 28-0 at the intermission.

The Wildcats put the game away with the opening drive of the second half. Thompson scored on a 39-yard TD run with 7:53 remaining in the quarter. Palacios PAT kick meant the clock would run unstopped the final 22 minutes of the contest with a 35-0 lead.

Milan's Mason Clark intercepted a failed half back pass attempt on the Tigers next possession and returned it to the 15-yard line. Richardson scored from there on the next play to make the score 42-0 following the PAT kick with 4:07 left in the third period.

Milan tacked on two touchdowns in the fourth period. Marcos Osario scored on a 25 yard run at the 7:45 mark of the fourth quarter.

Following Scotland County's second fumble of the contest, Milan found the end zone one final time when Brett Sinclair scored on a 15-yard run with 28 seconds left in the game to make the final score 54-0.

Scotland County was held to eight first downs on the night. McRobert led the team with 26 yards rushing on one carry. Bondurant had 22 yards on seven attempts and Ben Shannan added 20 yards on six carries. Bondurant completed five of 11 passes for 73 yards and one interception. Stone made two grabs for 30 yards. Holt had two catches for 27 yards and Shannan had one reception for 16 yards.

Milan needed just 18 first downs to rack up the big showing on the scoreboard. Backus finished with 133 yards on 16 carries. Thompson added 60 yards on four attempts as Milan used seven different backs to rack up more than 350 yards of rushing.

Bondurant led the Tigers defense with 20 tackles. Shannan added 11 stops.

Scotland County was flagged for 11 penalties for 115 yards on the night.

The Tigers fall to 1-5 on the year and 1-1 in the TRC. Milan improved to 6-0 and 3-0 in the TRC.
