Gophers Bury SCR-I In Tourney Third Place Game

A fast start for Green City of Saturday night at the Novinger Tournament helped the Gophers bury SCR-I trophy hopes in the third place game. Green City prevailed 67-57.

The Gophers led 12-11 after the first quarter before expanding the margin to 31-22 at the intermission.

Andrew Mathes put in seven points in a high-scoring third period that saw the Tigers trim the deficit to 48-42.

Harley Stone scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the final period but it wasn't enough as Green City held on for the win. The Gophers made 11 of 14 free throws in the final quarter to secure the victory.

Scotland County falls to 2-2 on the season. Mathes finished with 13 points and Brice Cowell added 11 for SCR-I, which was again without leading scorer Derrick Muntz, who is out with a knee injury.

Green City (2-1) was led in scoring by Matt Riddle with 13 points and Cody Holt and Chris Hoerrman each added 12.
