Memphis Man Seriously Injured in Fatal Knox County Crash

A chain-reaction crash in Knox County on January 17th resulted in the death of a Kirksville man and left a Memphis motorist with serious injuries.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 6:30 p.m. on Highway 11, approximately two miles west of the Route P intersection.

Ira O. Hoover, 40, of Hurdland was eastbound on Highway 11 in a 2003 Chevrolet when he attempted to make a left hand turn into a driveway. Troy D. Lawrence, 37, of Kirksville was westbound in a 2001 Ford. His vehicle impacted the rear of the Hoover vehicle and then crossed the center line and entered the eastbound lane, crashing headon with an eastbound 2006 Ford driven by Joseph R. Fulk, 54, of Memphis. Lawrence's vehicle was then struck in the side by a westbound 2004 Pontiac driven by Joseph D. Shaver, 26, of Brashear. The Lawrence vehicle then came to rest off the roadway.

Lawrence was pronounced dead at the scene by Knox County Coroner Jeff Doss at 7:15 p.m.

EMS workers from the Knox County and Adair County fire departments extricated Fulk from his vehicle with the jaws of life. He was flown from the scene by Air Evac helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries.

Shaver sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by the Knox County and Adair County ambulance services. Hoover was not injured.

Lawrence was transported to Travis Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Knox County Sheriff's Office, Knox County and Adair County first responders, Adair County Sheriff's Office, and the fire and ambulance services from Knox and Adair County as well as the Air Evac air ambulance.

This was the third fatality in the Patrol's Troop B region in 2012.
