Judge Karl DeMarce Sits With Missouri Supreme Court

Scotland County Judge Karl DeMarce (third from the left) hears evidence during a February 15th case before the Missouri Supreme Court. The local judge was selected to take the place of Judge Mary R. Russell who recused herself from the case.

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - On February 15th Judge Karl A.W. DeMarce, a judge on the 1st Judicial Circuit (Scotland County), sat by special designation with the Supreme Court of Missouri. DeMarce was sitting in the place of Judge Mary R. Russell who was recused from one case argued today.

"Judge DeMarce was a welcome colleague on the Court for oral arguments today," Chief Justice Richard Teitelman said. "We are fortunate to have judges from all levels of the court system so talented and willing to assist when the Court needs special judges to sit due to recusals or the absence of our judges."

In place of Russell, DeMarce heard the first case on the Court's docket this morning: Case No. SC91968, State of Missouri ex rel. MoGas Pipeline LLC v. Missouri Public Service Commission, an appeal from Cole County regarding a state agency's intervention in a federal regulatory proceeding.

DeMarce was elected as an associate circuit judge in 1998 and was retained by the voters in 2002, 2006, and 2010. DeMarce earned his law degree in 1997 from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law. DeMarce has served on the State Judicial Records Committee since 2003 and the Executive Council of the Judicial Conference since 2008, and is the current vice president of the Missouri Association of Probate and Associate Circuit Judges. DeMarce also served as State Representative of the 1st District from 1997 to 1998, Community Development Specialist for the University of Missouri extension of Scotland County from 1991 to 1994, and editor in chief of the Missouri Law Review from 1996 to 1997.
