John Johnson Wins Seat at Texas Hold'em 'Main Event'

John Johnson took home the first place trophy at the February 23rd installment of the TRGC Texas Hold'em League.

Just weeks into the 2012 season at Timber Ridge Golf Course (TRGC) and the Texas Hold'em League already has a fan-favorite to win the annual tournament of champions held every January.

The poker league hosts tournaments the second and fourth Thursday of every month in the golf course's club house. The top three qualifiers from each event qualify for the year end championship tournament.

On Thursday, February 23rd, John Johnson, claimed the first place finish. "Sonny" as he is known by most area residents, brought home the win in dominating fashion, besting a field of 18 players to take top honors.

His first place trophy is now on display in his room at the Scotland County Care Center. Sonny, a resident at the nursing home, enjoyed his night out at the golf course and is already making plans for the Tournament of Champions to be held in January 2013.

"Dad was dominating from the start," said Sonny's son, Mike, who helps organize the league. "He was so tickled. It was pretty cool when the tournament was over, everyone gave dad a 'hand' for winning. I don't think I have ever seen anyone receive applause for winning one of our tournaments."

Sonny is quick to point out that this "wasn't his first rodeo." He has played in several events and noted he hasn't ruled out playing in more of the monthly contests leading up to the championship.

The next TRGC Poker League event is scheduled for Thursday, March 8th beginning at 7 p.m. The entry fee is $20, payable to TRGC. Trophies are presented to the top three finishers in each tournament. The golf course provides the dealers, and free snacks, as well as the evening of fun. TRGC is fitted with custom built poker tables positioned in front of the satellite-feed big-screen television that typically has the sports program of choice for viewing entertainment.

All tournaments are open to the public, with seating capacity for up to 40 players.

The top three finishers at each regular nightly tournament gain entry into the season-ending tournament of champions also called the Main Event.

TRGC started hosting games back in 2006 with the league starting regularly scheduled tournaments in 2006. With an average of 20 players per event, the Texas Hold'em League has provided some needed revenue for the facility during the off season.
