Career Day Exposes SCR-I Students to Future Job Opportunities

Scotland County R-I High School hosted the district's annual Career Day on Wednesday, March 14th. Over 30 presenters were on hand to visit with students in grades 9-12 on the many career opportunities that are available following high school graduation.

The day was divided up into four twenty minute segments. Students rotated every twenty minutes, visiting a new area of interest. Over 180 students participated in the event.

Presenters included the U.S. Army, U.S. Marines, U.S. Navy, Missouri Army National Guard, University of Missouri Veterinary School, University of Missouri School of Law, Rick Fischer KMEM, Chris Duerr KHQA Sports, Lori Rader with Barker's of Keosauqua, IA, Massage Therapy of Bloomfield, IA, Vatterott, Quincy, IL, Indian Hills Community College programs including Computer Technology, Computer Programming, Digital Forensics, Aviation (pilot training & maintenance), Collision Repair, Andrew Humes (SC Class of 2011) Auto/Diesel Mechanics, Jeff Henderson (SC Class of 1987) Robotics & Automation, Colton Sparks (SC Class of 2009) Mechanical Design, Welding Technology, Bio-Processing, Ag/Bio Fuels, Laser Engineering and Renewable Energies, Jennifer McMinn & Kerri Shirkey (SCMH) Occupational & Physical Therapy, Moberly Area Community College Welding Technology & Technical Careers, Missouri Highway Patrol (Troop B, Macon, MO), Universal Technical Institute, Linn State Technical College, John Deere Company, Ottumwa, IA, and Andrea (York) Emel (SC Class of 2001) with Xenon International Academy, St. Louis, MO.

"The purpose of a career day is to get the students thinking about life after high school," said event organizer, high school guidance counselor Brent Bondurant. "Our speakers reaffirm what they are learning now, in preparation for what they will be learning later. They also stress the importance of a high school education, and the many doors it will open for them. When students have goals, they work with a purpose and enthusiasm."
