Voters Asked to Renew County Road & Bridge Tax Levy
Voters in the April 3rd election will once again be asked to decide the fate of the county road and bridge tax levy. For more than 60 years, county residents have supported the 35-cent tax levy, which is required by law to be voted upon every four years.
Proponents of the levy stress that this is not a new tax, simply an existing tax levy that is voted upon every four years.
Following the county's reassessment, the commission rolled back the rate to 31-cents, and the levy has remained at the lower rate the past several election cycles.
The special levy generates approximately $160,000 a year for the road and bridge department. By statute, the county is allowed to transfer up to 3% of the tax revenue into the general fund for administrative fees, but county officials have elected to maintain 100% of the funds for road and bridge improvements.
