Arbela Woman Air Evaced From Scene of Accident

An Arbela woman suffered serious injuries in a one-vehicle accident Tuesday morning at 6:50 a.m. south of Arbela.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Mary Norton, 36, was northbound in a 2001 Dodge Dakota on Route A, approximately 1/2 mile south of the Highway 136 junction, when she fell asleep at the wheel. The truck impacted the west side of a bridge before overturning and coming to rest on the driver's side on the embankment below the bridge.

The impact, impaled three of the bridge railings through the driver's compartment of the truck, creating a precarious extrication for emergency service personnel from the Scotland County and Gorin Fire Departments, the Scotland County Ambulance Service and the Air Evac helicopter medics.

Crews worked for nearly two hours to remove Norton from the vehicle. She was flown from the scene by the Air Evac helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Scotland County Sheriff's Office, first responders, and the Missouri Department of Transportation, as well as the fire and ambulance squads.

The vehicle sustained total damage and was towed from the scene by Lakeside Towing.
