Farmers Market to Kickoff Fourth Season on Thursday

Area residents will once again have the opportunity to purchase local products straight from the producer when the Memphis Farmers Market opens for its fourth season on Thursday, May 17th.

The three hour weekly market will open on the Scotland County Courthouse lawn at 3 p.m. providing shoppers an opportunity to buy locally grown produce, garden plants, farm-fresh eggs, baked goods, flowers, hand-crafted items and much more.

The market will be available each Thursday from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. through September.

In effort to entice new vendors to join the market, the local organization is waving the fee for Vendors in May.

"We are always looking to expand and add new vendors," said Gigi Wahba. "We hope more not-for-profit groups like Rotary will take advantage of the market as an opportunity to host a booth to further advance their fundraising efforts."

Vendors interested in securing space at the market can contact organizer Jeanne Snodgrass at 660-883-5614.

The Farmers Market currently is working on a grant application to help provide means to accept SNAP and EBT payments.

According to the University of Missouri Extension, farmers markets are gaining in popularity across the state and nation.

In Missouri, the number of farmer's markets more than doubled in less than a decade. An estimated 131 farmers markets were in operation in Missouri in 2007, compared to 53 in 1997. In the United States, the total number of farmers markets has increased by 82 percent since 1996. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that 4,385 farmers markets were in operation in 2006, compared with 2,410 in 1996.
