Off-Duty Cop Helps Nab Fleeing Drug Dealer

Serve and protect - that's the motto of law enforcement officers all over the country. It holds true, even when you are more than an hour away from home and stopped at a convenience store for gas following your kids ball game.

Sergeant Zach Campbell of the Memphis Police Department was in the parking lot of the Casey's General Store in Canton on Thursday, June 14th, stopped with his wife and in-laws following his step-daughter's softball game.

Campbell was sitting in the car when officers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Canton Police Department and Lewis County Sheriff's Department attempted to serve a warrant on 21-year-old Dermane D. Lloyd.

According to Canton Police Chief Hayes Shalley, officers had made contact with Lloyd in the parking lot of the store. They were attempting to serve a warrant for two counts of class A felony distribution of a controlled substance near schools when the suspect attempted to allude officers.

A witness stated that Campbell exited his vehicle and helped apprehend the fleeing suspect after a short foot pursuit.

Lloyd was transported to Hannibal Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries suffered in the scuffle. A Lewis County officer sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Lloyd was later transported to the Lewis County Jail where he is being held on a $100,000 cash only bond. He has since been charged with felony resisting arrest.

"We appreciate the efforts the off-duty Memphis officer made in assisting us in apprehending the suspect," Shelley stated.
