Traffic Stops Results in Drug Arrest

A Keokuk, IA, man is facing drug charges following a traffic stop in Scotland County at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 21st.

According to the Scotland County Sheriff's Office, James D. Jairl, 20, was ticketed for possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana, and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also ticketed for speeding and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license.

A sheriff's deputy pulled over a silver Pontiac Bonneville driven by Jairl for speeding. The traffic stop occurred at the intersection of Route MM on Highway 136.

During a consent search of the vehicle, the officer uncovered a plastic bag filled with 4.5 grams of a substance believed to be marijuana, as well as nine empty containers and an electronic digital scale.

A passenger in the vehicle, Shayla M. Johnson, 18, of Keokuk, IA, was ticketed for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jairl was transported to the Scotland County Jail where he is being held on a $5,000 cash only bond.

Jairl was scheduled to appear before Judge Karl DeMarce in the Scotland County Associate Circuit Court on June 26th for arraignment.
