SCR-I School Year Budget Ends in Red, But $320,000 Better Than Projected

A deficit budget was projected for the 2011-12 school year at Scotland County R-I. With anticipated shortfalls in revenue, the district was anticipating turning to its reserves to help offset as much as a half million dollar overrun. But at the July meeting of the SCR-I Board of Education learned the bottom line is looking much better than projected.

Superintendent Dave Shalley reported the preliminary, end-of-year deficit for the district as $197,080.57.

"The budgeted deficit amount was $523,032.00, which left us with a balance of $2,056,983," Shalley stated. "The revenues are figured conservatively, due to the economic uncertainty at the state level."

He noted the revenue projections are provided by DESE.

"Revenues for the year came in much better than the figures projected by DESE," Shalley said. "That helped reduce the deficit."

Milk/Bread Bids

The board received milk bids from Prairie Farms and bread bids from Earth Grains/Sara Lee and IBC. After reviewing the bids, the board voted 7-0 to accept the firm bid on milk from Prairie Farms and the bread bid from Earth Grains/Sara Lee.
