Pre-School Program to be Offered at Gorin R-III

The Gorin R-III Board of Education met in regular session Tuesday, August 21, 2012. With four members being present. President Tague called the meeting to order at 6:15 p.m. Rhonda Peterson was absent. Ryan Miller arrived at 6:35 p.m.

Following approval of the consent agenda items Mrs. Townsend presented the board with the tax rate information. She shared the district's current year adjusted assessed valuation is $4,226,406 and the actual tax levy to be submitted as the estimate of required local taxes is $4.3741. Bob Sears made a motion to approve the proposed tax rate. Diane Tague seconded. The motion carried with a vote of Tague, yes, Sears, yes, Berry, yes, Dale, yes, and Miller, yes.

With no old business on the agenda, the board moved directly to new business. Mrs. Townsend informed members of the board the Knox County High School tuition rate would remain the same as last years.

Next, Mrs. Townsend proposed the district add a part-time preschool program. She stated "that with the closing of the Luray Head Start site it is a hardship for our community children to receive preschool services." The proposed preschool program would be offered Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7:40 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for qualifying 3- and 4-year-olds. The program would begin the Tuesday following Labor Day and run through Friday, April 19, 2013. The district would not provide transportation unless the student's home was already on the bus route. Mrs. Townsend shared that she was pursuing registration as a recognized child care provided with the Division of Family Services, thus allowing the district to receive a reimbursement for services provided. She further proposed accepting non-resident students at a fee of $5.00 per day, with a limit of 10 students. Tammi Dale made a motion to offer the proposed preschool program and Ryan Miller seconded. All voted in favor.

Next, Mrs. Townsend informed board members that Missouri voters had overwhelmingly approved the amendment regarding prayer and religious expression. She shared that the district was now required to display the Bill of Rights of the Constitution and posters would be placed in near the entries of both buildings.

Lastly, the Board reviewed the district calendar and amended it so the district will be in session Wednesday, November 21st, dismissing at 12:30 p.m. and Friday, December 21st, dismissing at 12:30 p.m.

At 7:20 p.m. the Board moved into executive session. After discussing a student issue the board moved out of executive session at 7:47 p.m. The Board immediately adjourned.

The next regular board meeting is Tuesday, September 18th at 6:30 p.m.
