Sigler Avenue Next on City's Map for Street Improvements

Sigler Street could be getting a face lift this fall, as the Memphis City Council approved plans to include the high-traffic route in plans for an upgrade.

Superintendent Roy Monroe submitted an estimate of roughly $64,000 to have the street resurfaced with hot mix, as opposed to the traditional chip and seal used on city streets. In past years, the city has had hot mix installed on the city square and the surrounding blocks.

Monroe recommended Sigler Street as the next phase in the plans to improve city streets, starting with the higher traffic roads.

"Sigler gets a lot of traffic due to the hospital, so I would recommend it as the next street in the process," Monroe told the council.

A proposal from W.L. Miller Company called for approximately 575 tons of hot mix to provide a 1 1/2 inch overlay for the approximately 58,000 square feet of roadway on East Sigler Avenue from Highway 15 to the hospital.

Monroe stated he would recommend extending the project around the corner on Watkins Street to include both hospital entrances.

The timeframe for the project will be based on contractor availability, but could be completed this fall or next spring.
