Lighting of the Square Set For Saturday

The Christmas shopping season will officially commence this weekend in Memphis with the traditional lighting of the square ceremony. The Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce will host the special kickoff on November 17th at 5 p.m.

Memphis Mayor William Reckenberg will throw the switch on the chamber's Christmas lights at dusk, signifying the start of the holiday season.

The chamber will be offering numerous giveaways throughout the afternoon for patrons present for the event. Free train rides with Santa will be offered to children beginning around 3:30 p.m. Many businesses will be hosting weekend open houses on Saturday and Sunday, kicking off special extended hours through Thanksgiving weekend and beyond up until Christmas.

Entertainment will be provided by members of the Scotland County R-I band as well as other community musicians.
