Adair County Couple Facing Charges Following Traffic Stop

An Adair County couple is facing charges following a traffic stop in Memphis on December 1st.

A Memphis Police officer made the stop at 4:32 p.m. following up on a report of a gas drive off at the Cheese Post in Downing.

Robert B. Helton, 21, of Brashear, was driving the vehicle.

A subsequent search of the car revealed that a passenger, Katelyn Bowens, age 20, of Kirksville, was in possession of marijuana. Bowens was also found in possession of a package of Wal-Phed nasal decongestant tablets.

Bowens was taken into custody for possession of marijuana. It was learned during the interrogation that the pills, a common precursor used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, had been purchased to be re-sold for exactly that purpose.

On December 4th, a warrant was issued for Bowens's arrest on a Class D felony charge of possession of any methamphetamine precursor with the intent to manufacture.

She also was charged with a class A misdemeanor of possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana and a class A misdemeanor of a minor visibly intoxicated.

Helton, who currently is on parole for a July 2012 conviction on arson charges in Adair County, returned to the Cheese Post to pay for the gas and no charges were sought by the owners.
