WALTER FRANKLIN FARRELL

Walter Franklin Farrell, 90 of Lancaster, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Kirksville Manor Care Center where he had been a resident since February 2007.

The son of Walter Emery and Cleo Viola (Gosser) Farrell, he was born on October 22, 1921 in rural Glenwood, Missouri. On September 18, 1947, Frankie was united in marriage to Avis Wilma Schmitter in Kirksville, Missouri and to this union three children were born, Doyle Franklin, Forrest and Ivas Kay.

Surviving Frankie is his wife of 64 years, Avis Farrell of Lancaster, Missouri; one son, Forrest "Frosty" Farrell of Glenwood, Missouri; one daughter, Ivas Kay Shelby of Kirksville, Missouri; one grandson, Jonathan Shelby and wife, Nicole of Columbia, Missouri; one great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Shelby of Columbia, Missouri; 2 special girls, Nikki Cook Hines of Florida and Laci Cook of Kirksville, Missouri; several nieces and nephews; many cousins for whom he was very fond of and other family members.

Frankie is preceded in death by his parents and one son in infancy, Doyle Franklin Farrell.

Frankie received an honorable discharge from the United States Army where he served during World War II in the South Pacific area for 3 years, 3 months and 16 days.

He was a member of the undenominational Bethel church southwest of Glenwood, Missouri. He was also a member of the Oddfellow Lodge and was also a founder of the Singspirations of Schuyler County and surrounding areas.

Frankie and Avis were grain and livestock farmers for a number of years south of Lancaster where they made their home. Frankie especially enjoyed his cattle, sheep and mules. Frankie was also employed in the Maintenance Department with Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri for several years.

He was certainly loved by many.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 12, 2012 at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Missouri with Raymond Magruder assisted by Sonny Smyser officiating. Music was provided by Margie Tippett, organist and Cole Tippett, soloist. Special musical selections of "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" and "How Great Thou Art" were performed. Pallbearers were Vic Farrell, John Farrell, Leon Schmitter, Paul David Moore, John Kerby and Gary Smith. Memorials have been established for the Schuyler County Nutrition Site or Arni Memorial Cemetery. Burial was in the Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster, Missouri. Military rites were conducted by the Scotland County VFW Post 4958. Online condolences may be expressed to the family by logging on to nfhome.com.
